Be prepared to give the attorney the information he needs to evaluate your situation. You can also put the info into an email or a spreadsheet that the attorney can read so he can quickly give you initial feedback.
Of course, different issues apply, depending on whether you have a case of divorce, separation, modification, paternity, etc.
Name: Legal name, address, contact phone, email, birth date, name of employer, type of job.
Marriage: date, place.
Divorce: date (approx), place. (Only give this if we are looking into modification or enforcement of a divorce decree).
Separation: if applicable, give date parties separated; which party moved out of the home; if there are children, where the children have been residing and what visits have taken place since the separation.
Income: give annually or monthly, for both spouses. If income fluctuates, give an average.
House: fair market value (estimated), debt balances. Are the payments current? If missed, how long? Who makes the payments? Do both spouses own the house?
Vehicles: give year, make model for each. Who drives each? What debt and payment for each? What value, based on Private Party Value on Kelley Blue Book, kbb.com.
Debts: What amounts? What payments? Are they current? Who pays them?
Other assets: what other large assets (only big ones, retirements; not furniture and clothing and personal items, yet).
Children: If you have disputes over minor children, give the names, birthdays, ages. Residence: are you all together? Separated? If so, how long? What have been the visitation arrangements? For how long?
Outcome: what outcome do you want for custody, visits, support, house, cars, debts, other things.
Pending case: has a case already been filed? When? What case number? Have any Orders been entered? Are any more scheduled? When?
For Modification of prior orders: What is the order? When/where was it made? What modification do you seek?
Other information: is there a pre-marital agreement?
It is usually helpful to organize this info into a spreadsheet so you have it all handy in a format that is easy to read, and easy to add changes and corrections.
